New Delhi: Massive protests took place across the country against the UPA government's decision to hike the price of diesel by Rs 3, cooking gas by Rs 50 and kerosene by Rs 2. Expectedly this anti-aam aadmi measure has united the Opposition. The BJP minced no words and called for a roll back.
BJP leader Sushma Swaraj said, "This is the tenth hike. This time victims are housewives, farmers and poor people. The Central Government is being insensitive to the common man's problems."
It is not just the Opposition, even allies were quick to register their protest. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee swiftly moved in to cut the cess on LPG by Rs 16. The Congress already on the backfoot on food inflation has asked all its Chief Ministers to reduce the state cess on cooking gas. The government slashed customs duty on crude oil, petroleum products and excise duty on diesel.
Congress leader Janardan Dwivedi said, "Remember, price rise has also happened during the NDA regime."
Keeping the political battle over oil price hike apart, it is the aam aadmi who will bear the brunt of the decision.
Voices will become strident in the coming days as the stage is set for a very stormy monsoon session of Parliament.
