Sheriff: Girl unaware mother, brother were killed

Reuters

By Patrick Garrity, NBC News

The Southern California girl rescued over the weekend in Idaho was taken against her will and not aware her mother and brother were dead until her rescuers told her, a San Diego County sheriff told a local television station Monday.

?It is clear from the information that we?ve received, that she was under extreme duress. She was taken out of the county, out of the state, clearly against her will,? Sheriff Bill Gore told FOX5 San Diego.

Hannah Anderson, 16, was rescued Saturday by federal agents in the Idaho wilderness. Her suspected abductor, James Lee DiMaggio, was killed in a shootout, authorities said, ending a week-long search.

DiMaggio, 40, was wanted in the killing of Christina Anderson, 44, and 8-year-old Ethan and the abduction of Hannah.

?The kidnapper, the murderer is dead. Our focus now is getting Hannah all the resources, the help she needs to get through this extremely traumatic ordeal that she?s been through,? Gore said in the interview. ?Plus, let?s not lose sight of the fact that she?s lost her mother and her brother, which she was not aware of until she was recovered up in Idaho."

The horseback riders in Idaho who spotted kidnapped teen Hannah Anderson and James Lee DiMaggio felt uneasy about the two people in the deep backwoods, saying Anderson "had a fearful look in her eyes."

The girl has been reunited with her father, who is expected to hold a news conference Monday.

Gore said in interviewing the girl, authorities learned that DiMaggio did have a "shoulder weapon and fired at least one shot,? he said.

Meanwhile, Hannah's grandmother has said it was "fitting" that DiMaggio was killed by an FBI sharpshooter.

Sara Britt, Hannah?s maternal grandmother, said death of DiMaggio ? known by the Anderson family as "Uncle Jim" ? had been for the best.

?The way it ended up for both Hannah and Jim. It?s fitting,??she told NBCSanDiego?on Sunday.

?No one wants to go through years of jury trials and putting Hannah through any of that,? she added.

Pilot in deadly Conn. wreck survived earlier crash

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) ? The plane accident that killed four people in a Connecticut neighborhood was not the first crash for the pilot, a former Microsoft executive who was taking his teenage son on a tour of East Coast colleges.

The pilot, Bill Henningsgaard, was killed along with his son, Maxwell, and two children who were in a house struck by the small propeller-driven plane on Friday. Their bodies were all recovered from the crash scene.

East Haven police on Saturday released the names of the crash victims, including Henningsgaard, 54, of Medina, Wash.; his 17-year-old son; 13-year-old Sade Brantley and 1-year-old Madisyn Mitchell, who lived in the East Haven home hit by the plane.

National Transportation Safety Board investigator Patrick Murray said Saturday the plane was upside down when it struck a house at about a 60 degree angle. He said the pilot was making his first approach to the airport and did not declare an emergency before the crash.

After removing the wreckage and before analyzing any data, he said at a news conference in New Haven, "We don't have any indication there was anything wrong with the plane."

A preliminary NTSB report on the crash is expected within 10 business days. A more in-depth report could take up to nine months.

On Saturday night, dozens of people turned out for a vigil at Margaret Tucker Park to honor those who died in the crash. Among those in attendance was the woman who lost two children when the plane struck their house.

Mayor Joseph Maturo told the crowd at the vigil that the show of support was a great tribute.

"I think this is a great tribute to a great town," the mayor said, "a caring town, a loving town. A town that comes out when things are down and people need you."

Gov. Dannel Malloy said in a statement that the vigil was a "profound statement of the ties that bind East Haven and our entire state together as one community."

"When a family suffers an unimaginable tragedy, we come together and pray that they have the strength they need to carry on," Malloy said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with all the families tonight who are suffering from grief and loss."

Henningsgaard, a highly regarded philanthropist, was flying a small plane to Seattle in 2009 with his mother when the engine quit. He crash-landed on Washington's Columbia River.

"I forced myself to confront that fact that the situation any pilot fears ? a mid-air emergency, was happening right then, with my mother in the plane," he wrote in a blog post days later.

In the Connecticut crash, Henningsgaard was bringing the 10-seater plane, a Rockwell International Turbo Commander 690B, in for a landing at Tweed New Haven Airport in rainy weather just before noon when the plane struck two small homes, engulfing them in flames. The aircraft's left wing lodged in one house and its right wing in the other.

As the children's mother yelled for help from the front lawn, several people in the working-class neighborhood raced to rescue the children, but they were forced to turn back by the fire.

A neighbor, David Esposito, was among those who raced to help the children's mother. He said he ran into the upstairs of the house, where the woman believed her children were, but he couldn't find them after frantically searching a crib and closets. He returned downstairs to search some more, but he dragged the woman out when the flames became too strong.

The pilot's family had learned it was Bill Henningsgaard's plane through the tail number, said his brother, Blair Henninsgaard, the city attorney in Astoria, Ore.

In 2009, Bill Henningsgaard was flying from Astoria, Ore. with his 84-year-old mother to watch his daughter in a high school play when he crashed into the river as he tried to glide back to the airport. He and his mother, a former Astoria mayor, climbed out on a wing and were rescued.

Henningsgaard was a member of Seattle-based Social Venture Partners, a foundation that helps build up communities. The foundation extended its condolences to his wife and two daughters.

"There are hundreds of people that have a story about Bill ? when he went the extra mile, when he knew just the right thing to say, how he would never give up. He was truly all-in for this community, heart, mind and soul," the foundation wrote Friday in a post on its website.

Paul Shoemaker of Social Venture Partners told The Seattle Times that Henningsgaard was "an incredibly good, real, honest man, for the community, for his family, for this world."

"The guy has already done so much for the world. And he was going to do so much more," he said.

Henningsgaard spent 14 years at Microsoft in various marketing and sales positions, according to his biography on Social Venture Partners website. He was a longtime board member at Youth Eastside Services, a Bellevue, Wash.-based agency that provides counseling and substance-abuse treatment, and led the organization's $10.7 million fundraising campaign for its new headquarters, which opened in 2008.

Disney prepares a toy offensive with 'Infinity'

GLENDALE, Calif. (AP) ? With cartoony posters plastering the walls and toy figures standing at attention on nearly every flat surface, a once ordinary conference room on Disney's Glendale campus has been transformed into the colorful war room for "Disney Infinity," the ambitious project from the company's interactive division that combines real-life toy figures with virtual worlds.

"This is like being in my bedroom," says "Infinity" executive producer John Vignocchi while bouncing around the space, gleefully showing off concept art, prototypes and a mock-up of a store display. "This is really the most comfortable place where you could talk to me. It's where every massive fight and every major decision concerning 'Infinity' has gone down."

It's fitting the space has been dubbed the "Infinity" war room because the Walt Disney Co. is readying for a yearslong siege ? not just a one-time battle ? for consumers' attention with the multi-platform franchise. At its fan-centric D23 Expo on Sunday, Disney unveiled a second wave of characters coming to "Infinity" this fall and winter after it debuts Aug. 18.

"Infinity" utilizes real-life toy figures to depict Disney personalities in sprawling virtual locales where those same characters can do stuff like race vehicles, create and play games and construct buildings ? cooperatively or alone ? as well as go on specific adventures in their own realms. Each toy stores and transmits the character's history through an "Infinity" reader.

The new additions include Sorcerer Mickey from "Fantasia"; Woody, Jessie and Buzz Lightyear from "Toy Story"; Wreck-It Ralph and Vanellope from "Wreck-It Ralph"; Phineas and Agent P from "Phineas and Ferb"; Jack Skellington from "The Nightmare Before Christmas"; Rapunzel from "Tangled"; and Anna and Elsa from "Frozen," a new Disney film set for release Nov. 27.

The second infantry joins such previously announced characters as Jack Sparrow, Hector Barbossa and Davy Jones from "Pirates of the Caribbean"; Mike and Sulley from "Monsters University"; Lightning McQueen, Mater and Holley Shiftwell from "Cars"; Mr. Incredible, Violet and Dash from "The Incredibles"; and Lone Ranger and Tonto from "The Lone Ranger."

"In the beginning, when we picked our first set of characters, it was more about going around and saying why we wanted those characters to the various groups around the company," Vignocchi said. "As time went on and the creators began to see what we were doing with 'Infinity,' the roles kind of changed a bit, and they started approaching us with excitement."

The game ? or platform, as Disney likes to call it ? will be available for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii and Wii U, as well as accessible through Nintendo 3DS and PC, and on tablets and smartphones. The toys work seamlessly between consoles, meaning a Mrs. Incredible figure can go from a PS3 in your living room to the Wii in your friend's basement with her superpowers intact.

It's not the first of its kind. "Infinity" closely resembles the successful "Skylanders" franchise from Activision Blizzard Inc. However, Disney's rendition of the toy-meet-console genre relies on better-known characters and adds an open-world toy box mode akin to "LittleBigPlanet," where users' imaginations can run wild, for example, plopping Jack Sparrow in Cinderella's coach.

If audiences pull the trigger on "Infinity," it could become another huge moneymaker for Disney. A starter pack, which includes the game, reader, three characters, three playsets and a power disc that bolsters abilities or adds new items to the toy box, will be $74.99 with additional figurines and discs sold separately or bundled together, like in the villains and princess packs.

Disney is betting "Infinity" will be a hit. Disney Interactive Studios, which has been responsible for such games as the Mickey Mouse console adventure "Epic Mickey" and the online virtual world "Club Penguin," is the company's least successful division. In recent years, it's moved away from console games in favor of more popular and cheaper to produce mobile games.

"It doesn't mean the console can't be popular and successful from a bottom line, but it's definitely a different world," Bob Iger, the company's chairman and CEO, told the Fox Business Network ahead of the D23 Expo at the Anaheim Convention Center on Friday. "We've had our, call it, fits and starts in this business, and we think we are due for a hit. We believe 'Infinity' is that hit."

Users report new Nexus 7 suffering from GPS issues

The urban-hunchback shuffle is usually demonstrated by commuters slouching over a phone, in search of a pre-meeting coffee-house. But, if you're attempting something similar with the latest Nexus 7, maybe leave a little earlier. Why? Because word is that some users are reporting funky behaviour with the tablet's GPS. Issues vary from total flake out, to halting after 10 to 30 minutes. Several attempted fixes -- including complete reinstalls -- haven't fixed things. Google is aware of the problem, and working on a fix -- but no details on when this might be delivered. It's suggested that disabling Google Play Services might help things. This component of Android is used by other apps though, so proceed with caution. Is it affecting you? Let us know in the comments.

8-foot-long sturgeon found floating in Lake Washington

by GLENN FARLEY / KING 5 News

Updated yesterday at 5:45 PM

LAKE WASHINGTON - Biologists with the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife were out on Lake Washington on Tueday taking DNA and other samples from a seven-foot sturgeon found over the weekend by a family out water skiing in the northern section of the lake.

Keith Magnuson said his son first spotted as they were speeding along in their boat on Saturday morning. "That's a shark!" was the assessment at first glance.? They then went back to see what it was.

Floating upside down is a large white fish without scales.? Eight feet was their initial guess.? They were close, but figured it wasn't a shark. It was a sturgeon.

But it probably wasn't the first time. Magnuson remembers a case in 1987.?

"For years there had been monster sightings, like Loch Ness-type stuff," he said, pointing from the Seattle shore over toward Kenmore.? "And finally a dead sturgeon came to the top and that was surmised to be the monster."

Brad James, a biologist with Fish and Wildlife in Vancouver, Wash. and the agency's expert on the pre-historic looking fish, says sturgeon primarily spawn in the Columbia, Sacramento and Fraser rivers, but there is also a population that lives in Puget Sound.? He said it's likely the fish swam into the lake through the Ballard Locks, and could have been feeding in the lake for years, only discovered once it died and floated to the surface.

James said the biologists from the department's field office in Mill Creek will also check the fish for tags, that along with DNA will help identify where it came from.

The case is just another one for the unusual fish files of Washington state.? In 2011, the decomposing head of a large tropical dwelling hammerhead shark? was found on a beach in West Seattle.? In 2002, a 100 pound, five foot long rag fish was found dead on a beach in Olympia.? That fish normally lives in? depths of up to 1,400? feet off the coast.? In 2007, another seven foot sturgeon was found in Olympia's black lake.

Biologists also plan to date the fish, by counting growth patterns not unlike tree rings.? James said some sturgeon can grow faster than others so the size does not dictate the age of the fish.

Nylander-Altelius goal helps Sweden hold off Canada at Ivan Hlinka tournament

Left wing William Nylander-Altelius, considered one of the top five European prospects available in the 2014 NHL Draft, scored the decisive goal early in the third period to help lead the Swedish Under-18 Select Team to a 4-3 victory over Canada in preliminary-round action at the 2013 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka on Tuesday in Breclav, Czech Republic.

The victory moves Sweden into a tie with Canada (one win apiece, three points) in Group A. Canada will resume action on Wednesday against Switzerland at 9:30 a.m. ET on the final day of preliminary-round action, while Sweden battles Czech Republic at 1 p.m. ET.

Canada pared the deficit to 3-2 on a power-play goal by Sam Bennett of the Ontario Hockey League's Kingston Frontenacs just 3:54 into the third. Bennett, who had 18 goals and 40 points in 60 games in 2012-13, is regarded as one of several Kingston prospects high on everyone's board for the 2014 draft. The 6-foot, 178-pound left-handed shot was named Canada's player of the game.

The Swedes answered right back with a power-play goal of their own when Nylander-Altelius, the son of former NHL center Michael Nylander, converted a wrist shot at the 6:09 mark.

Less than a minute later, a collision in front of Sweden's net left starting goalie Jesper Eriksson in serious pain. The 5-foot-11, 172-pounder, who was named the team's most valuable player for the game, was eventually taken off the ice via a stretcher and replaced by Linus Soderstrom.

Swedish defenceman Gustav Forsling was whistled for tripping on the play, giving Canada a man advantage. The Canadians then pulled to within 4-3 when Kingston's Spencer Watson connected on the power play just 1:10 after the penalty. It was the first shot taken on Soderstrom.

But the Swedish goalie would settle down to make a few big saves down the stretch. Watson would later be issued a major penalty and game misconduct for kneeing Sweden's Gustav Franzen with just 1:13 remaining in regulation. The penalty gave Sweden a man advantage, but Canada pulled its goalie to create a 5-on-5 situation in an attempt to even the game. The Swedes wouldn't be denied their first win of the tournament, however.

After spotting Canada a 1-0 lead early in the first period, Sweden connected for three straight goals. Kevin Elgestal's second of the game just 1:01 into the second off a scramble in front gave the Swedes a 3-1 lead. Elgestal, a 6-foot, 172-pound right wing, was identified on NHL Central Scouting's Futures List as a potential first-, second- or third-round candidate for the 2014 draft. He currently stars for Frolunda HC in Sweden.

Sweden, desperate for a win after suffering a 3-2 regulation loss to Switzerland on Monday, pulled into a 1-1 tie 6:17 into the first when forward Robin Kovacs beat starting goalie Mason McDonald on a wrist shot from the right circle. Elgestal gave Sweden a 2-1 lead off a scramble in the slot at the 8:07 mark. Following the Elgestal goal, Canada coach Dale Hunter replaced McDonald with Julio Billia.

Billia, who made 13 saves in earning a 4-0 victory over the Czech Republic on Monday, would make several big stops to keep Canada within striking distance.

The Canadians had taken a 1-0 lead 3:14 into the first when Jared McCann of the Ontario Hockey League's Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds took a feed in the slot before backhanding a shot past Eriksson.

The top two teams from Group A and Group B will cross over for the semifinals on Friday before the gold-medal and bronze-medal games scheduled Saturday.

Pros and Cons of iPhone Data Usage Data Tracker App

One thing is for certain; while the iPhone comes equipped with plenty of data trackers, you do have to be careful which one you choose because many of them simply don?t have enough facets or do only the bare minimum to make sure they are keeping track of your information properly. The iPhone Data Usage app does a splendid job of keeping you well-informed about all the information you are using and equips you with plenty of statistics as well. Listed below are some of the qualities which recommend the app:

  1. The iPhone Data Usage app is a Universal app, so you get two versions ? including an iPad version ? with just one purchase.
  2. It allows the user to set limits on the use of data by the week, month, evens the day.
  3. What makes it a fantastic data tracker is the fact that it will permit you to keep tabs on both your cell phone and Wi-Fi data usage separately.
  4. It will automatically reset the tracking information when your payment cycle comes to an end.
  5. Your ideal data use is estimated for you by using the amount of data you presently use.
  6. It will send you notices during a payment cycle that indicate when certain amounts of your data plan have been used up. No nasty surprises here.
  7. It will keep you informed of exactly where the data was used.

??

This iPhone app is one of those apps that come around only once in a blue moon. Meaning, one that takes care of nearly every detail you?d be concerned with. While a lot of the other data tracker apps out there simply don?t do enough, it does more than enough. First off, the application actually instructs you on how to use it when you are using it for the first time, and setting it up is simple too. All you need to do is go into the settings, enter the start and end date of your payment cycle, and then enter your data cap. After you?ve finished doing that, it will begin tracking your data. You?ll be notified when your use reaches 50%, and from there on at every 10% marker until you reach your cap.

Also, checking the application itself can help you obtain a lot more information. It provides detailed graphs so you can view your data use over time.

There is only one disadvantage to Data Usage, but it?s one that every application has: background issues. If you want it to work correctly, it has to be run every time you restart your phone to make sure all background tasks are active.

NWSL: Boston Breakers part ways with Head Coach Lisa Cole

SOMERVILLE, MA ? The Boston Breakers and coach Lisa Cole have parted ways, the club announced Friday afternoon. Defender and Olympic gold medalist Cat Whitehill will take over coaching duties for Boston as a player/coach on an interim basis while the team searches for a new permanent manager.

?Lisa was a critical participant in the launch of the National Women?s Soccer League and making sure there was a professional women?s league in the U.S.,? Boson Breakers managing partner Michael Stoller said. ?I cannot thank her enough for her years of service to the Breakers and women?s professional soccer.?

Assistant coach Maren Rojas also left the club ahead of their home game Saturday against the Western New York Flash.

?I have great respect for both Lisa and for Maren,? Stoller said. ?Lisa is highly regarded in the women?s game and her dedication to the sport throughout the years is unmatched, from club, college, amateur, and up to the professional level.?

The Breakers currently sit fifth in the National Women?s Soccer League standings, having taken 23 points from 18 games with a 6-7-5 record. They trail the Flash by seven points for the fourth and final NWSL playoff spot with four games to play in the regular season.

?At this point, as the team makes a push to the playoffs, this was a change that needed to be made,? Breakers General Manager Lee Billiard said. ?Lisa has done so much for our organization and the women?s professional game in general. It is with great regret this change had to be made.?

Cole took over as head coach for the Breakers in 2012 after arriving at the club in 2009 and spending three years as an assistant under Tony DiCicco. She posted a 17-10-5 record during her two years in charge of the Breakers in both the NWSL and Women?s Premier Soccer League.

?Lisa is a highly respected coach and had many great seasons in Boston,? Billiard said. ?Maren came to the team with a great coaching resume, and we have respect for both coaches.?

Rojas joined Boston ahead of the 2013 NWSL season. She previously served as an assistant coach at Boston College for the women?s soccer team.

Rugby Union: Simpson signs new Wasps deal

London Wasps scrum half Joe Simpson has committed his future to the club after they announced he had signed a new "long-term deal".

Simpson signs new Wasps deal

The 24-year-old, who has made 105 appearances for the Premiership side since first making his debut back in 2008, becomes the latest Wasps man to agree fresh terms.
Joe Launchbury, Christian Wade, Sam Jones, Elliot Daly and James Cannon have all recently signed new deals and now Simpson has added his name to that list in another pre-season boost for Wasps.
Simpson said: "I am delighted to sign a new contract. Wasps is my home town club and the club I grew up supporting. I was honoured to play for Wasps full stop, let alone become one of the senior players and play as many times as I have already.
"I am excited about the future that we have here on and off the field. Some of our best players here haven't even reached their prime yet and we've got a squad who are nowhere near their peak yet and that's the reason I want to be part of it. I want to grow as a player with this squad and go and help Wasps to compete for honours again."
Wasps Director of Rugby Dai Young was also delighted with the development and thinks he can go on to enjoy plenty more success in the future.
He added on the club's website: "I am very pleased that Joe is committing himself to club for the future. He already a very good player but I believe there is a lot more to come from him.
"We've got a core of young English talent here and Joe is at the heart of that. He's achieved a lot for his age but he's got the ability and talent to achieve lots more as a Wasps player."

U.S., states propose remedy for Apple e-book price-fixing

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Apple Inc deserves a five-year ban from entering anticompetitive e-book distribution contracts, and should also end its business arrangements with five major publishers with which it conspired to raise e-book prices, federal and state regulators said on Friday.

The U.S. Department of Justice and 33 U.S. states and territories proposed those changes and others after a federal judge last month found in a civil antitrust case that Apple conspired with the publishers to raise e-book prices.

Regulators accused Apple of conspiring to undercut Amazon.com Inc's e-book dominance, causing some e-book prices to rise to $12.99 or $14.99 from the $9.99 that the online retailer had been charging.

U.S. District Judge Denise Cote in Manhattan on July 10 ruled that Apple had played a "central role" in a conspiracy to eliminate retail price competition and raise e-book prices.

A hearing to discuss remedies is scheduled for August 9. Cote has said she also plans to hold a trial on damages.

Facebook?to explain its News Feed at Aug. 6 event

Social media

Facebook

Duane Hoffman / NBC News

The Facebook News Feed is a source of frustration and confusion for many. Why does it show the things it shows? Why doesn't it show every photo posted by that one girl you like? How do you control it? The social network will finally break things down on Aug. 6.

According to the press invitation for 10 a.m. PT / 1 p.m. ET on Tuesday at Facebook's headquarters in Menlo Park, Calif., Facebook will be "taking a deeper look at the ranking algorithms that determine which stories appear at the top of your feed" and discussing "a specific update to organic ranking that?s coming up."

We also expect to hear plenty of reminders about the signals we can give Facebook to help it better rank content in the News Feed. For example, liking an item, commenting, sharing, or otherwise interacting with a post can indicate that we want to see more items like that. On the flipside, hiding the post from our News Feed using the dropdown menu, signals that we don't want to see similar items as much.

How Facebook intends to improve or change the News Feed ranking remains a mystery though ? until Aug. 6, at least.

Want more tech news or interesting links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook posts, or circling her on?Google+.

Monster Hunter Frontier Online Coming to Wii U in Japan

Based on the trailer, it looks like a lot of fun

Monster Hunter Frontier Xbox 360 002

It may be an oddity in the series, but for game-starved Monster Hunter fans in the West, the MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) Monster Hunter Frontier Online has likely been a source of interest and envy. Considering that so much of the fun in Monster Hunter Tri and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate has been through online play, the idea of an online-only game in the series certainly has its appeal.

It's only been available in Japan, naturally, and was released on PC way back in 2007, before being ported to the Xbox 360 three years later. It's getting rather long in the tooth, as a result, but with MMORPGs that's not necessarily a big issue; if it's fun and there's an active community, rough visuals don't matter a huge amount. Showing that it's not ready to retire this subscription-based title yet, Capcom has confirmed that it'll be coming to Wii U (and PS3) later in the year, and Director Tatsumi Kimoto has stated the company is working on ? but not promising ? some special features for the GamePad and potentially some 3DS functionality; we'll see what comes of that.

It hits Wii U in Japan on 11th December 2013, and perhaps fans of the main-series games will be tempted to try this spin-off on Nintendo's system. We're unlikely to ever see it in the West, unfortunately, so perhaps gamers outside of Capcom's homeland will be restricted to gazing longingly at the announcement trailer, below.

The election, which took place at the Board of Governors meeting on Tuesday, makes Isaacs only the third woman to become AMPAS president in the organization's 86-year history, and the first African-American to hold the position. Hers is a notable achievement in an organization that in recent years has come under fire for being predominantly white and male.

She is also the first Academy president whose election was announced by AMPAS on Twitter while the governors were still voting on other offices.

Isaacs is one of a record total of 14 women on the 48-member AMPAS board, and its only African-American.

A longtime marketing and publicity executive who represents the Academy's Public Relations Branch, Isaacs, 63, has consulted on recent Best Picture winners "The Artist" and "The King's Speech" as the head of CBI Enterprises. She has also served as president of theatrical marketing for New Line Cinema and as executive vice president of worldwide publicity for Paramount. Her earlier publicity campaigns include Oscar winners "Forrest Gump" and "Braveheart."

Last year, Isaacs and her fellow Public Relations Branch governor Rob Friedman were the only two governors to also receive votes in the balloting that elected Hawk Koch AMPAS president. She was elected the organization's first vice president that night, and later produced the Academy's 2012 Governors Awards.

Over the years, she has filled every position on the board: secretary, treasurer, vice president, first vice president and now president.?

Isaacs and Friedman were considered the two frontrunners for the position, which went to the first candidate to receive more than 50 percent of the votes from the Academy's 48 governors, 10 of whom were elected to the board for the first time last month. (Only governors who attended were eligible to vote.)

While Friedman's full-time job as co-chairman of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group would have made it almost impossible for him to devote as much time to the presidency as Koch or his predecessor, Tom Sherak, Issacs is considered likely to be able to focus on her Academy duties.

Panasonic unveils 16MP Lumix GX7 Micro Four Thirds camera, 42.5mm f/1.2 lens

Panasonic unveils 16MP Lumix GX7 Micro Four Thirds camera, 45mm f12 Leica Nocticron lens

There's not much to reveal about Panasonic's Lumix DMC-GX7 since it leaked (nearly) in full just days ago, but now it's official. This 16-megapixel Live MOS shooter is Panny's latest Micro Four Thirds offering aimed squarely at prosumers. This retro-styled camera is a much svelter option than the video-focused GH-3 ($1,500) thanks to its magnesium alloy casing. Along with in-body image stabilization and a swift shutter that tops out at 1/8000th of a second, the ISO tops out at 25,600. If video is your concern, it'll capture 1080p footage at 60 fps (24 Mbps) in AVCHD.

While the GX7 will burst shoot with autofocus tracking at 4.3 fps, its electronic shutter lets it hit 40 fps if pure speed is what you're after -- while we're on it, the shutter will also operate in a silent mode. Notably, a vertically-tiltable 16:9 Live View Finder is onboard, packing a resolution of 2.76 million dots and the ability to fire off the autofocus once it detects an eye. Two control dials aid in manual settings along with a rear-facing LCD touchscreen, which tilts up to 80-degrees. If all that wasn't enough, built-in WiFi and NFC allow for the likes of remote viewfinder apps and sharing media.

The GX7 will hit the US this November in a silver and black colorway priced at $1,100 with a 14-42mm kit lens, and $1,000 for just the body itself. A sleathier all-black variant will also be available, though only in Japan. Aside from the camera, a new Lumix lens with Leica tech will also hit shelves, offering a 45mm 42.5mm focal length with a speedy f/1.2 aperture -- the fastest in the lineup to date. Hit the press releases after the break for more details.

Update: We've corrected the focal length of the fast prime lens, which is 42.5mm rather than the 45mm we originally reported.

Want To Be A Morning Person? Take A Few Tips From Campers

All in the name of science: Volunteers hike in Colorado during their one-week hiatus from electrical lighting.

In the first episode of Downton Abbey, the Countess of Grantham, played by Maggie Smith, complains about the newfangled electrical chandelier installed in her family's 1915 estate. "Oh, dear, such a glare," she says, shielding her eyes with a fan.

The countess may have a point.

Too much artificial light at the wrong time can change sleep patterns and make us groggy in the mornings, scientists report Thursday in the journal Current Biology.

They found that a week of camping ? completely away from all electrical lights and computers ? quickly synchronizes the body's internal clock to the sun. And it helps night owls, who have problems getting up, rise earlier and be more energetic in the morning.

The study is small. Just eight people took time off from their busy schedules to camp in Colorado's dazzling Eagle Nest Wilderness (all in the name of science, of course).

But the findings support those from previous studies and offer some easy tips for helping us all to become morning people.

"If you consider people who are very late night owls, they stay up late and have a greater difficulty of being alert in the morning," says sleep biologist Kenneth Wright, who led the study. "After camping, we found that their clocks were shifted ? and they looked more similar to the early risers."

Everyone has a clock inside their brain that tells the body when to sleep. But unlike a wristwatch, the circadian clock is flexible. It can slow down or speed up depending on how much light is around. That includes rays from computers and phones.

"We already knew that electrical lighting, especially at night, can push the time of your clock later and that leads to later bedtimes," Wright told Shots.

But what about sitting under artificial bulbs all day in the office, he wondered. Could that alter sleep patterns, too?

To figure that out, Wright and his team at the University of Colorado, Boulder, gave eight volunteers wristbands that measured their light exposure and sleep times.

For the first week, the participants went about their normal activities, going to work or school. "Then we took them all on a camping trip," Wright says. "They slept in tents, and they received only natural sunlight and campfires."

In the wilderness, the subjects got the same amount of sleep as back in civilization. But their internal clocks jumped ahead two hours, on average, Wright says. So they went to bed earlier and woke up just after the chemicals in their brain told them it was time to rise and shine. (Before the camping trip, people were actually waking up before their brains told them to.)

"Individuals who had the latest bed times back at home had the larger shift in their internal clocks after camping," Wright says. Essentially, everyone became a morning person.

Two factors contributed to the change. Everyone got exposed to about four times as many photons while camping than they did in town (because sunshine is much brighter than indoor lighting). And the timing of the light was different. In the wilderness, people were exposed to more light early in the day and less after sunset.

Those findings offer city dwellers a few strategies to help them rise and shine earlier ? no tent or bug spray needed.

"We can achieve earlier bed times by having people be outside more, especially in the morning," Wright says. "You could start your day with a morning walk. Raise the shades in the house. Or if you read the newspaper, do it outside."

"On the flip side," he says, "reduce exposure to light at night by dimming the lights or computers. This is especially important within the hour prior before bedtime."

Sleep doctor Katherine Sharkey at Brown University says that's exactly how she treats one type of sleep disorder. "We use bright light in morning to advance circadian rhythms," she tells Shots.

Sharkey wasn't involved in the current study, but she calls it "clever." And she says the take-home message is important.

"When we flick on those light switches, there's a biological effect, beside just letting us watch TV or read," Sharkey says. "The light does things to our body's clock ? not necessarily bad but just different."
