The storm photo that just won't die: Where did it come from?

1 day

Social media and news sites have been abuzz over an amazing image supposedly showing?Hurricane Isaac. The picture was actually taken by an amateur in Brunei, but that hasn't stopped people from using it to illustrate all kinds of weird things over the years.?

Last week, something almost as cyclical as storms themselves began spreading across social media ? an old, dramatic image of a green-ish cloud hovering above water. Numerous people attributed the picture to Isaac but, as quickly as the picture spread, even making a brief appearance on Britain's Daily Mail,?people began debunking it. This image seems to pop up every time there's a big storm ? but where did it come from??

1. A dream

This storm was used to illustrate a post about a guy's desert island dream. Scroll to the end for Adriana Lima shots.

2. Spiritual wordplay

In 2008, Tom Cottar used the image for a blog post on spirituality and anagrams ? "Did you ever realize that Britney Spears is an anagram for Presbyterian? Or that Pepsi Cola is an anagram for Episcopal?"

3. Climate change denial

A post from 2010 outlined one right-winger's belief that global warming is hokum.

4. Latvian weather roundup

5. Blackberry device

7. Baltic storm

8. Moving from Wisconsin to Michigan

9. Twitter update

And the original?...

As suspected by eagle-eyed colleague John Herrman, the original photo was apparently taken by a photographer named Richard Seaman, who posted a whole bunch of photos from a trip to Brunei. Reached by email, he confirmed: "Yes, it's my photo."

Seaman issues stern take-down warnings for uncredited and uncompensated use of his work but sadly, it seems that the picture was just too good ??and too divorced from its source ? for the Internet not to use over and over again.

Bell tolls for South Africa as England win 4th ODI

Ian Bell made 88 as England beat South Africa by six wickets in the fourth one-day international at Lord's on Sunday to go 2-1 up with one match to play in the series.

Man-of-the-match Bell's innings was the cornerstone of England's 224 for four as they won with 20 balls to spare after good work by their bowlers restricted South Africa to 220 for eight.

Together with Warwickshire colleague Jonathan Trott (48), Bell shared a second-wicket stand of 141 after England lost captain Alastair Cook in the first over of their innings when he was lbw to a superb late inswinger from fast bowler Dale Steyn.

However, the Proteas -- without rested paceman Morne Morkel -- couldn't make further early inroads despite Steyn hitting Trott, a former South Africa youth international, on the finger.

As the floodlights took full effect on a gloomy day where the overcast conditions had prompted Cook to field first, Bell cover-drove left-arm seamer Wayne Parnell for four and advanced down the pitch to flat bat him over cover-point for another boundary.

Bell later drove left-arm spinner Robin Peterson high over long-off for six.

He was reprieved though on 65 when dropped by Peterson at mid-on off Lonwabo Tsotsobe. Next ball Bell pulled the left-arm seamer for four.

"I've been working at Warwickshire at hitting over the top, that's what you need to do opening the batting in one-day internationals," explained Bell.

Trott's patient innings ended when he was lbw on the sweep to slow left-armer Dean Elgar after South Africa reviewed Australian umpire Simon Taufel's original not out decision.

After Ravi Bopara fell cheaply following a brief rain break, Bell tried to slap a short ball from Steyn on the offside and was caught behind one-handed by leaping South Africa captain and wicket-keeper AB de Villiers to end a 137-ball innings featuring a six and eight fours.

England still needed a further 35 runs for victory but the innings ended in a blizzard of boundaries, with left-hander Eoin Morgan a run-a-ball 36 not out and Craig Kieswetter, who ended the match with a superb off-driven six off Steyn, unbeaten on 21.

Earlier, James Tredwell atoned for dropping two catches with three wickets as England restricted South Africa to 220 for eight.

The off-spinner took three for 35 in eight overs, with all his wickets stumpings completed by Kieswetter -- the first England wicket-keeper to have three stumpings in a one-day international.

"We've got a lot to look at now; our middle order failed again," said a disappointed de Villiers.

"We keep getting in and fail to go on to big runs. We just didn't have enough runs on the board today."

Cook added: "We made the most of the early conditions. Finny (Steven Finn) and Jimmy (Anderson) up front asked plenty of questions."

But the new-ball duo were denied an early wicket.

Tredwell, who took two for 49 in England's four-wicket series-levelling win across London at The Oval on Friday, got his chance this campaign when England rested number one spinner Graeme Swann because of a longstanding elbow injury.

And it seemed England might miss Swann as much for his slip catching as his bowling on Sunday when Tredwell dropped openers Hashim Amla, on four, and Graeme Smith, on 26, both off fast bowler Finn.

Dropped catches had helped Amla become the first South African to a Test triple century, at The Oval last month, and make 150 in an 80-run win in the second one-dayer in Southampton.

As it was, missing Amla on Sunday 'only' cost England 41 runs when he was bowled by medium-pacer Bopara for an innings top score of 45.

Amla's exit was the start of a South Africa collapse from 100 for one to 115 for four with JP Duminy stumped off a well-flighted Tredwell delivery.

De Villiers (29) and Parnell (five) were also both stumped by Kieswetter as Tredwell took two wickets for no runs in five balls.

The series concludes at Nottingham's Trent Bridge ground on Wednesday.

Claudia Castillo: Foodie Friday: My Chocolate Fix - Rumors and News

2012-08-31-Chocolateandblueberries1.jpg

This post goes out to all chocolate lovers surfing the Web. If at this moment, or at some point in the near future, you get a chocolate craving I recommend that instead of purchasing your usual chocolate fix, you buy a block of broken Callebaut dark semi-sweet Belgium chocolate. If you are in a tight spot and in desperate need of a quick fix of chocolate, then I probably wouldn?t recommend this recipe. If on the other hand you are willing to try a completely different way of both eating and drinking chocolate then I suggest you try buying your own block of chocolate the next time you shop.

Whether its milk chocolate bars, chocolate syrup in our sundaes or cups of hot cocoa with marshmallows during the winter, most of us indulge in some type of chocolate on a regular basis. What many of us don?t realize is that the type of chocolate we buy here is not the same type of chocolate others purchase outside of the United States. The quality of the ingredients in the United States, in my opinion, is not up to par with chocolate from other parts of the world. With the exception of small businesses that really focus on the craft of creating chocolate. Most of what you buy from name brands at most major stores barely passes for chocolate. Whatever happened to milk & cocoa as the main ingredients? We have become so accustomed to such a watered down version of chocolate that most of what we are getting are artificially flavored chocolates jammed packed with high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated oils.

2012-08-31-chocolateandblueberries2embajador.jpg

I admit that I already have a biased opinion towards North American name brand chocolates. Before coming to the United States I was already used to drinking hot cocoa made with blocks of chocolate de mesa or sweet dark baking chocolate and milk. The hot cocoa comes out a little thicker and foamier, with a much darker and richer aroma. In Europe, they tend to use cocoa powder and milk to make hot cocoa but the consistency is usually much ticker, like syrup, and served in smaller portions. According to wiki, and the various sources it quotes, it has a lot to do with the cocoa content of the chocolate used. The United States only requires a 10% concentration of cocoa liquor to be present in milk chocolate and it mentions that most chocolate producers have lobbied to replace cocoa butter with other types of oils which include hydrogenated oils, and with sugars which include artificial sweeteners. Yuck! In other countries, the chocolate content is much higher and therefore you get a richer taste. I don?t know why mayor food producers in this country love to screw with their consumers. We always end up with the short end of the stick when it comes to receiving high quality food products, but it?s time for the blind fold to come off and for your life to become very chocolaty indeed.

2012-08-31-Chocolateandblueberries3.jpg

First, visit any large grocery chain specially health food stores like Whole Foods which carry this type of chocolate. You should be able to find broken up blocks of Callebaut chocolate next to where they exhibit their imported cheese selection. Don?t buy the unsweetened dark chocolate. It?s great for baking but its super bitter. I don?t want to you running for the hills just yet. Make sure you buy the broken semi-sweet dark chocolate from Callebaut. You should be able to find the Callebaut name engraved in the mix matched blocks of chocolate. If you can?t find Callebaut, look for baking chocolate that is semi-sweet. I wouldn?t buy chocolate chips, unless you find some that share similar ingredients with the Callebaut semi-sweet chocolate which contains 53.8% cocoa (sugar, unsweetened chocolate, cocoa butter, soy lecithin, salt, and pure vanilla extract)

2012-08-31-chocolateandblueberries4.jpg

Next, pick up some fruit. I bought blueberries which to me make the best chocolate pairing. It also helps that they are super cheap during the summer months while they are in season. Also, try buying New Jersey blueberries. That?s very biased advice because I grew up in NJ, but NJ is one of the largest producers of blueberries in the country and even though it?s already the end of the season you should be able to find highly discounted blueberries in stock at supermarkets.

2012-08-31-Chocolateandblueberries5blueberries.jpg

Let?s get started!

Ingredients
Block of broken Callebaut dark semi-sweet Belgium chocolate
Pint of blueberries
Your favorite type of nut or granola
Milk

TIP ? Don?t use a cutting board. I find it easier to place a cloth kitchen towel on top of the kitchen counter, and then place a large paper towel on top of the cloth towel. It helps keep the shards of chocolate from spreading all over your kitchen counter, and it also muffles the sound from the cutting board.

2012-08-31-Chocolateandblueberries6collage.jpg

Directions

  • If you kept your chocolate in the fridge after you buy it, make sure you leave it out for at least a half an hour so that it?s easier to shave.
  • With a large non-serrated knife, start to shave the chocolate off the block. Look at the images I posted. The chocolate can be cut into chunky pieces. It looks like you are cutting shards off chocolate.
  • Please be careful with your fingers. You are using force when you cut. This is a block of something hard it?s like cutting fruit. I certainly don?t recommend kids doing this without parental supervision.
  • As you shave the chocolate you will notice that you will have to turn and flip your block of chocolate to get a better angle. The more you cut, the more you run out of cutting real estate, so you just have to keep looking for the best edge to cut off.
  • Cut as much as you like, but if it?s just for you, cut about enough to yield 3 tablespoons.
  • Put the remainder of the block in the fridge in a sealed Ziploc bag. If you live in a house where the kitchen doesn?t fluctuate in temperatures then I recommend you seal it away and put it in a dry place instead of the refrigerator.
  • Make sure your fruit is cleaned and chopped up into chunks. If you use blueberries you don?t have to do anything but wash them and remove any stems.
  • In a ceramic coffee cup, place your three tablespoons of shaved chocolate and put in the microwave for 30 seconds. If you have a super strong microwave, make it 20 seconds.
  • Take it out and stir with a spoon. You will notice that it hasn?t really melted. All you have done is melted the chocolate a little around the edges.
  • If you are making 3 tablespoons of chocolate, then add one to one and a half tablespoons of milk to the same cup. Try one tablespoon first. It?s preferable to have a thicker consistency than to get something that resembles hot chocolate. You want this to have a syrupy texture.
  • Add to the microwave for 20 to 30 more seconds. As with before, it depends on your microwave?s heat settings.
  • Take it out and then stir with a spoon. It might look watery at first, but keep stirring until you see a chocolate colored texture.

Add your blueberries, mix, and then pour on top of some waffles, pancakes, dessert, but best of all ON TOP OF SOME ICE CREAM! Just imagine how amazing this melted chocolate syrup will taste in a sundae. If you have granola, then add granola. You can pretty much add anything to this chocolate sauce. What?s even better is that you can also pour it over anything too.

2012-08-31-Chocolateandblueberries7.jpg

Instead of buying chocolate at the store, I am now addicted to this type of chocolate. It?s just so GOOD! The difference is that I don?t add the mixture to anything. I just eat the chocolate and the blueberries straight out of the cup. Sometimes I even put the blueberries in the freezer for a couple of minutes until they start to get really cold and frosty. Then I proceed to add the hot chocolate syrup on top. I also mix the chocolate syrup with the blueberries and freeze the combined mixture together. I use cupcake paper as a mold and then I end up eating a delicious and cool dark chocolate blueberry bar. And to think that all I added to the chocolate shavings was some milk. It certainly has enough cocoa butter so don?t go adding more butter. It?s also super fresh, without any preservatives or artificial sugars. It?s the way chocolate was intended to be enjoyed!

It might be more work than buying a bar of chocolate at the store, but you are trading time for the flexibility of adding any ingredient you might fancy. I promise you that it will be worth the wait.

Buen Provecho! =)

The future of NFL analysis

Moving beyond general offensive, defensive stats will paint a more detailed picture

OPINION

By SCOTT KACSMAR

NBCSports.com contributor

updated 5:44 p.m. ET Sept. 1, 2012

For NFL fans seeking strong statistical analysis, mainstream progress has been very slow. Sports networks still rank the best offenses and defenses by total yards. Even a casual fan knows yards are not more important than points.

But general scoring stats also do not paint a detailed picture of how a team?s game or season went. A lot of the numbers in a game summary suffer the same problems. We need deeper context.

Fortunately, there is a better alternative. One that hopefully will become a permanent fixture in even the most general NFL analysis, and that is to look at the drive stats.

Football is a series of drives
At its core, football is a game primarily about offense versus defense, sprinkled in with some special teams.

Every team may play four quarters and 60 minutes, but what matters are the possessions; the drives that decide the outcome. Those are not constant. How the game was played ? different paces and tempos ? dictates the number of drives, and all of this is very important when analyzing a team?s stats.

You may have seen some drive stats recently as the networks showed how quarterbacks Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow have equally led the New York Jets to zero touchdowns on 15 drives each this preseason.

Last season, the worst offense in the league at scoring touchdowns ? the St. Louis Rams managed just 16 ? scored a touchdown on 8.4 percent of their drives. The Green Bay Packers led the league at 37.5 percent (63 touchdowns on 163 drives).

Interested yet? This is the kind of analysis one can learn from drive stats, which are found in the early pages of an official NFL game book (see "Ball Possession And Drive Chart").

Fortunately, a website like FootballOutsiders compiles drive data regularly, and you can view it for the 1997-2011 seasons. You can look at offense or defense, and the bottom table includes net drive statistics that take both into account.

Why drive stats work better than traditional stats
Let?s apply drive stats to the pair of 2011 games between the New England Patriots and New York Giants. First it was a 24-20 Giants? victory in New England in Week 9, and of course a 21-17 win in Super Bowl XLVI.

By traditional stats, one may say the Giants did better offensively the first time. Having 24 points is better than 21, and if you remember the Super Bowl starting with Tom Brady?s bizarre intentional grounding for a safety, then the disparity is actually 24 to 19.

But how many people remember that the Week 9 game was 0-0 at halftime? Drive stats tell a much different story of how well the Giants played offensively. In each game, the Giants had a kneel-down drive before halftime, which is excluded.

  • In Week 9, New York?s offense had 13 possessions, scored 24 points (1.85 per drive), and gained 362 yards (27.8 per drive).
  • In Super Bowl XLVI, New York?s offense had eight possessions, scored 19 points (2.38 per drive), and gained 397 yards (49.6 per drive).

If you take both totals and drive stats, this is where the Giants would have ranked in the 2011 regular season:

  • Week 9 (totals): 24 points (10th) and 362 yards (14th).
  • Week 9 (drives): 1.85 points per drive (15th) and 27.8 yards per drive (19th).
  • Super Bowl XLVI (totals): 19 points (26th*) and 397 yards (5th).
  • Super Bowl XLVI (drives): 2.38 points per drive (4th) and 49.6 yards per drive (1st).

*20th using the Giants? full 21 points for an apples-to-apples comparison. The NFL scoring rankings do not separate for non-offensive scoring plays. Drive stats do.

The Giants had an elite performance on offense in the Super Bowl when you look at the drive stats. On eight possessions, they scored two touchdowns and two field goals, while also moving the ball well on four drives that ended in a punt.

Yet that would never be recognized if you only looked at their below-league-average 19 points on the scoreboard. But an offense can only score when they have the ball, and on eight possessions, they produced like an elite offense.

Fewest offensive drives since 1997

Rank Team Season Drives
1 Colts2008 144
2 Colts2006 148
3 Colts2005 156
4T Colts 2007 158
4T Patriots2007 158
4T Patriots2010 158
Sometimes you just don't get enough chances, something Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning?s brother Peyton is very familiar with. Based on the data at FootballOutsiders, the Peyton-led Indianapolis Colts have had the top four seasons with the fewest offensive possessions since 1997.

Manning?s highly efficient offense limited his opportunities, as did a Colts defense that gave up many completions and plentiful gains on the ground. It was the perfect storm for games with few possessions, and ultimately it means the Colts? offensive stats are better than they look, while the defense was actually worse.

Drive stats properly credit offenses and defenses for scoring plays they were actually on the field for, while giving us a much better indicator of efficiency and performance than the totals ever will.

Progress Energy Florida seeks renewable energy project proposals

Progress Energy Florida has issued a request for proposals for renewable energy projects. According to documentation issued by the company, it is looking to offset the need for new power plants by contracting with renewable projects. A variety of projects can qualify, including those the produce electricity from biomass, renewable hydrogen, solar, geothermal, wind, ocean power, hydroelectric or waste heat from manufacturing.

In addition to being renewable, the project must also meet several other requirements to qualify. The project must be cost-effective, meaning that it can deliver electricity at a cost that is equal or less than the cost to build new power generation. The project must also be able to operate in a predictable and reliable manner. In addition, eligible projects must be located in Florida and be fully operational by June 1, 2018. Finally, a project must be capable of producing a minimum of 1 MW of power.

According to Progress Energy Florida, it has two types of renewable energy contracts that have been pre-approved by the Florida Public Service Commission. An as-available contract doesn?t contain an obligation to deliver power to Progress Energy Florida, and payments are based on the fuel savings that that Progress Energy achieves due to the purchases. A standard offer contact contains an obligation to deliver energy to Progress Energy Florida on a reliable basis. Payments are based on the power plant, or part of a power plant, that the company doesn?t have to build due to this purchase.

Progress Energy Florida also said that it is willing to negotiate other agreements in situations where neither the as-available contract nor the standard offer contract is not satisfactory for an eligible project.

Additional information on the request for proposals can be downloaded from the Progress Energy Florida website.?

Forceful arrests inflame sentiment toward LAPD

(AP) ? A spate of incidents in which Los Angeles police officers are accused of using excessive force is threatening to unravel the Police Department's efforts to bolster community relations.

Video in recent weeks has captured officers punching a handcuffed suspect and slamming a restrained woman to the ground. In the third case, a woman stopped breathing in the back of a police car and later died.

The incidents come after years of reforms by the LAPD to improve its officers' conduct.

The efforts, undertaken under a federal court order, have yielded results: The city's crime rate is the lowest in four decades, and police are getting praise from communities, including minorities and gays, that had historically complained about mistreatment.

But the recent incidents underscore that for some police officers on the street, the line on acceptable use of force remains blurry.

"There's been a real effort to change the culture," said Joe Domanick, a professor at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice who is writing a book on the transformation of the LAPD after the Rodney King beating. "It takes a long time for a culture to change, for things to trickle down."

Andrea Ordin, president of the Los Angeles Police Commission, the department's civilian oversight panel, said it's too early to tell if a trend toward overaggressive tactics is developing.

"We are seeing community groups coming to our meetings and talking about the changes in the Police Department and that they appreciate the better communication," she said. "At the same time, we're seeing these incidents. Each of these has to be investigated thoroughly."

In one incident, Alesia Thomas died in a squad car July 22 after struggling with officers trying to arrest her on suspicion of child endangerment. She had left her two children at the police station where they told officers their mother didn't want them, and they had not eaten for several days, said Cmdr. Andrew Smith.

During the struggle to get Thomas into the patrol car, a female officer was captured by the car's video camera threatening to kick Thomas in the groin if she did not obey, and then she made good on the threat. A short while later, Thomas stopped breathing.

Police Chief Charlie Beck has reassigned the five officers involved and ordered an investigation.

On Aug. 21, registered nurse Michelle Jordan was pulled over for holding her cellphone while driving. She got out of the car and did not comply with an officer's demand to get back in the vehicle. The 5-foot-4-inch woman was slammed to the ground by two male officers and handcuffed. While being led to the patrol car, another officer slammed her to the ground again.

The incident was captured by a surveillance camera at a nearby restaurant.

The officers involved were removed from patrol duty pending an investigation, and their supervising captain was transferred. Beck said the videotape raised serious concerns and ordered it shown at officer roll calls throughout the department.

In a third incident, college student Ronald Weekley Jr. was stopped Aug. 18 by officers for riding his skateboard on the wrong side of the street. A bystander's cellphone video appears to show an officer punching the 20-year-old in the face while he was on the ground being handcuffed with four officers on top of him. He said he suffered a broken nose and cheekbone.

Weekley was arrested on suspicion of resisting arrest. Police have launched an internal investigation to determine whether excessive force was used, but the officers involved remain on duty.

"These are unarmed, handcuffed suspects. It's a disturbing, growing trend of police brutality throughout Southern California," said Najee Ali, of the South Los Angeles civil rights group Project Islamic Hope. He noted two other nearby cases that outraged citizens: The police killing of two suspects last month in Anaheim, which sparked a riot, and the July 2011 fatal beating of a handcuffed, homeless, mentally ill man in Fullerton.

Smith, the LAPD commander, said use-of-force incidents are not on the rise. The department records about 1,600 such cases annually, a number that has remained constant in recent years.

"That's out of the millions of contacts we have with the public and the tens of thousands of arrests. Because there's videotape in these incidents, they get a lot of media attention," Smith said.

Officers are permitted to use "reasonable" force to make an arrest, prevent a suspect's escape and overcome resistance. "The question is, is it objectively reasonable? If it isn't reasonable, we hold them accountable," Smith said.

Officers are also extensively trained to verbally persuade people to do what they want without resorting to force, said Richard Weinblatt, a former police chief and police consultant who is a dean at Ivy Tech Community College in Indiana.

Police academy trainers, however, notice that younger cadets, who grew up communicating via text messages and email, and in an era where schoolyard fights are not tolerated as they once were, often lack verbal communication skills and experience in dealing with physical aggression, Weinblatt said. At the same time, criminals are more violent than ever.

"Officers are just plain scared," Weinblatt said. "They don't have the communication skills or physical confidence of previous generations. They're jumping higher and quicker on use of force because of that fear element."
